Around the world in a bowl of rice: Is My Blog Burning? 4th edition

I have been talking with Alberto about hosting Is My Blog Burning? for a while, and finally decided the time is right for this. Please join us in the newest edition of Is My Blog Burning? on Sunday May 23th. The theme of this one is “Around the world in a bowl of rice”.
A bit of history, in case you've been living behind a mountain and have not yet heard of Is My Blog Burning? :-) It came from a simple yet brilliant idea conceived by our Alberto of Il Forno. The first edition of IMBB was in February, the theme was Soup. Alberto's idea drew participation from far and wide, with food bloggers and none-food bloggers alike from Europe, America, and as far away as South East Asia joining in.
The idea caught on, and has since become a semi-monthly affair, which has so far included a Tartine edition, hosted by the delightful Clotilde of Chocolate and Zucchini, and a Cake Walk, hosted by my girl Renee of Shiokadelicious.
Each IMBB? edition affords us a glimpse into the complexity and diversity that is our world. From Durian Cake in Singapore to the omnipresent Tartine of Paris, we celebrate both the difference and the interconnectedness in our lives.
Having grown up in Thailand, rice has long been the center of my culinary experience. It is also one of the most ubiquitous grains in the world, taking part in cuisines everywhere from the Italian risotti, to Senegalese Ceebu Jën (red rice), and to Thai Jasmine rice.
Now it is your turn. Make us a rice dish that you remember fondly from childhood, or invent a creative one of your own. Move us all a little closer to one another.
The rules, or guidelines, rather, are simple
The theme is Rice, make a dish that has rice as the star.
It can be someone else's recipe that you love, or your very own creation, only please give credit when one is due.
The dish can be made at any time, but please post your result on your (or your friend's) blog on Sunday May 23th.
Photos and recipes are highly appreciated.
Please leave a comment to let me know of your participation, and provide a link to your fantastic rice creation.
I am honored to be hosting this newest edition, and I hope you join us.
Burn, baby, burn!

Welcome back from your travels, Pim!!!
I'm very new to food blogs and I love the whole Is My Blog Burning concept. Thank you in advance for taking on this newest edition. Since rice is one of my favorite foods--and one that was very important in my family, I would like to participate. Could I e-mail you a picture of my rice dish, when I make it? I look forward to seeing all the different rice dishes that will be submitted by people.

Paris, I'm jealous.
Do we email you to notify you of the posted dish?
Posted by: dave | May 5, 2004 11:37:23 AM
Dave,
Thanks for pointing out the omission in my post. I've just added the part about leaving a comment to let me know that you participate.
Leave a comment and a link here to let me know, please. I hope you burn your blog with us.
cheers,
Pim

Melissa will be happy with this one. She _loves_ rice. But to do something interesting with it (I don't have any childhood rice dishes that I can remember), that will be fun.

Rice, our favourite grain. Please count us in. Husband will also cook something.

Helloooo Pim!
What a wonderful subject, you can count me in!
Posted by: Deb | May 6, 2004 8:31:07 AM
Hi Pim! Count me in for the rice theme! Great idea!
Posted by: Kate | May 6, 2004 8:52:20 AM
Yey! Well done Pim - great theme. And of course, there's a lot of parphanelia and anacdotes to add, such as rice cooking devices...
Here's an issue to consider. When I occasionaly post a recepie, I like doing it on http://wikibooks.org/wiki/Cookbook. I like the idea of social construction of a vast knowledge base. On the other hand, I can see the appeal of blogs (not surprising, seeing that I own one). There's a lot to be said for the personal voice.
So.. what do you say?
Posted by: Yish | May 6, 2004 9:04:55 AM
Great idea-- count me in! I'm already thinking of a few Southern rice dishes that remind me of gramma...

Rice is a gorgeous theme, I can just envision a whole kaleidoscope of recipes come 23 March. Count me in - my first IMBB, woohoo.

Finally a reason to dive into my _Seductions of Rice_ cookbook which covers China, Thailand, Japan, Senegal, India, Asia, Persia, the Mediterranean, you get the picture. Anyway a simple incentive and lots of spontaneity (could I even find a banana leaf in northern Ontario?) and I'll post something rice based on May 23rd. Good idea!

Thank you so much everyone for such enthusiastic responses. Please do help me put the words out.
This is going to be such fun!

Rice is right up my culinary ally...count me in. I can't wait to come up with something interesting. There aren't any dishes of my youth that would qualify as primarily rice though...unless you could my mom using a box of those chicken and herb flavored rice packets!
No...I will not be making one of those!
Great idea and thanks for hosting.

Hey, pim, fyi here's my contribution -http://flow.arrr.net/archives.shtml?20040520 - I know, I know, it's early, but I'll be out of town this sunday (see note inside) sans rice-cooker, and thought I'd post while I can. Enjoy! And I hope I get a few new folk involved in all of this.

Sorry to be so dense! Also I am linking to your post today. Thanks for doing this and choosing such a great theme.
